A 24 hour plumber for Wasco homes and businesses
An emergency plumber is a licensed plumber who takes urgent water, drain and gas-line calls at any hour, not just during office time. Our 24/7 dispatch line covers Wasco, with the nearby towns of Shafter and McFarland covered the same way.
Most urgent calls fall into a few groups: pipes that burst or leak, drains that back up, heaters that stop heating or start leaking, and the occasional sewer or gas problem. If you are unsure whether it counts, call anyway. We will say plainly whether the problem needs a visit tonight or a same day plumber visit tomorrow.
Behind the phone is a list of 21 services, from clearing a kitchen drain to a full sewer repair. The whole list is on our services page, and the biggest ones are linked below.
Do these five things while you wait for the plumber
What you do in the first few minutes often decides how much of the house gets wet. None of this needs tools.
Stop the damage first
- Close the main water valve Look where the line enters the house or by the meter box. Turning it off also keeps the water in the heater and toilet tanks from draining out.
- Stop using drains If a drain is backing up, pause the dishwasher, washer, showers and toilets. Every gallon you add looks for the lowest opening.
- Keep power away from water Stay out of wet areas with outlets, cords or the heater's electrical connection. Switch off a breaker only if you can reach it dry.
- Smell gas? Leave first Walk out on foot, then call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 or 911 from outside. Do not call a plumber before you are clear.
- Call the 24/7 line Say what you see, where the main valve is and your cross street. That is enough for dispatch to line up the right plumber.
Every plumbing service we dispatch in Wasco
The calls that cannot wait are usually burst pipes, hidden leaks, clogged drains and failed tanks that need a replacement heater. Each page below explains symptoms, how the cause is found and what changes the price.
Emergency tonight, or a same-day visit?
Not every plumbing problem needs a midnight call. This table shows how we sort them, and you can still phone for advice at any hour.
| What you see | Call the emergency line now | Fine for a same-day visit |
|---|---|---|
| Water from a pipe or ceiling | Spraying, pooling or soaking drywall | A slow drip you have shut off at the valve |
| Drains | Sewage coming up in a tub or floor drain | One slow sink with the rest of the house draining |
| Water heater | Tank leaking onto the floor | Lukewarm water with no leak |
| Toilet | Overflowing and not stopping | Running between flushes |
| Gas | Smell of gas: leave and call the utility first | Pilot or appliance question after the utility says it is safe |
| Water bill | Meter spinning with every tap shut and water visible | Bill higher than usual with no visible water |
A shut valve changes the answer. If you have stopped the water yourself, a licensed plumber can often come the same day when appointments are available.
Not sure if it is an emergency?
Call the line and describe what you see. We will say whether it needs a visit tonight or can wait for a same-day appointment.
What happens after you call the Wasco line
- A person answers and asks what you seeYou describe the problem in plain words. Dispatch asks where the main valve is and whether anyone is hurt or smelling gas.
- You are walked through the first movesWater, power and drains come first, so damage stops growing while the visit is arranged.
- A licensed plumber is matched to the jobA tank swap, a sewer camera job and a leak search need different tools and training, so the match follows the symptom.
- You hear the price before work startsThe plumber explains the cause, the repair options and the cost factors. You say yes or no before anything is opened.
- The repair is testedThe plumber checks the fix under normal use and tells you what to watch for, including any permit or inspection that applies.
What decides the price of an emergency call
No honest plumber can name a figure without hearing the problem. These are the factors that build the quote.
If insurance may cover sudden water damage, take photos and call your insurer. Want your real number? Call the number on this page and describe the problem.
Where Wasco's water comes from, and what that means at home
The City of Wasco gets its water from groundwater wells in the Kern County subbasin. The city's 2022 water quality report counts six active wells and about 94 miles of distribution lines, and a chlorine residual averaging 0.67 ppm. A faint chlorine smell from the tap is therefore normal, and a carbon filter at the faucet is one fix.
That report does not list hardness, so we do not quote a number. Check the tap with a test strip or lab test before buying a softener, and read the newest city report for anything about water quality. We do not judge health questions, and a plumber cannot treat the city supply.
The report also describes the city's plan to drill new wells and treat an existing one. Because that work changes what comes out of the tap, read the latest version on the City of Wasco site rather than relying on an older copy.
Whose pipe is it? Sewer, leaks and backflow under Wasco code
Under the city's sewer code, your house connection runs from 12 inches outside the building wall to the city main, and maintenance is the property owner's responsibility. A backup between the house and the main is therefore yours to repair, and a sewer line repair may be the answer if clearing the line does not hold.
The code also requires a cleanout where the house line meets the soil pipe. No permit is needed to clear a stoppage or repair a leak, but replacing the sewer with a different material needs one. Ask your plumber to confirm before digging.
Wasco's water conservation chapter expects leaks to be fixed, and it treats 48 hours after discovery as reasonable. A running toilet or sprinkler leak is worth fixing soon. Irrigation and fire-line owners should also know the city's backflow chapter calls for assemblies to be tested at least annually by a state-certified tester.
Soil, slabs and hidden leaks around Wasco
The USDA describes the Wasco soil series as a well-drained sandy loam on alluvial fans, found mainly in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Water that escapes from a buried line can soak away instead of pooling, so a hidden leak may show up first as a high bill or a damp patch near the meter. Our leak detection page explains how acoustic and thermal tools pinpoint such leaks without opening the whole yard.
The state classifies the Kern County Subbasin as critically overdrafted, and falling groundwater can cause land to sink. We cannot say that subsidence is breaking Wasco pipes, because no source we found links the two. A pipe that leaks should still be found and fixed, whatever the cause. According to EPA guidelines, reading your water meter, using no water for two hours and reading it again shows whether a leak is likely.
Wasco first, with Shafter and McFarland close by
Wasco is home base for our dispatch, and the 24/7 line also covers the towns below. Each town page lists its ZIP codes and the local rules that matter for plumbing.
Residents of Shafter, about 8 miles away along State Route 43, can call the same line. So can anyone in McFarland.
Permits, licenses and who to call at City Hall
City Hall is at 746 8th Street. Wasco has no separate Building department in its directory, so start with Community Development or Planning when you need a permit answer. The state plumbing code in effect since January 1, 2026 is the 2025 edition, while the city's adopted code text still names the 2022 edition, so confirm with the city before a heater swap or repipe.
California requires a contractor license for plumbing work above a small dollar threshold set by the state, and a license can still be required on small jobs that need permits or workers. According to the Contractors State License Board, you can verify any plumber's license online. Verify first, whoever you hire.
Quick answers about emergency plumbing in Wasco
Yes. The emergency line answers every hour of every day, including nights, weekends and holidays. A licensed plumber is matched to your problem, and you hear a clear price before work starts. We do not promise an arrival time.
Same-day appointments are offered when available. If your problem is an active leak or a backup, say so on the first call, because it affects how the visit is arranged. A shut valve and a quiet drain often make a same-day visit enough.
Close the main water valve, stop using drains, and keep people away from wet areas near electricity. If you smell gas, leave the building and call SoCalGas or 911 from outside. Take photos of damage for your insurer.
The price depends on what failed, how hard it is to reach, the parts, any permit and the hour. The plumber explains these factors and the total before opening anything. If you want to talk it over first, call the number on this page.
Under the City of Wasco's sewer code, you are. The house connection runs from 12 inches outside the building wall to the city main, and the city does not maintain it. Confirm the details with the city before approving a large repair.
Replacing a water heater usually needs a permit and inspection from your city or county building department. We did not find a Wasco-specific rule online, so call the City of Wasco before the job. State law also requires the new heater to be braced against earthquakes.
Owners and property managers can call at any hour. Tenants should shut off the water and notify the owner right away, and the owner usually approves work and payment. Tell us who authorizes the repair when you call.
